Thanks for sharing your insight. It is far too easy to just consider this topic and say we are not racist or that we treat everyone equally. A pillar of how I treat people is to treat everyone the same-- fairly, however, we must look deeper as we teach students and as we teach patients.

This is an excellent article.
I'm reminded of a man I cared for during my NP training (at the VA). He had diabetes, needed insulin, and lived in a group home of some sort. In my ignorance, I talked to him about refrigerating his insulin, taking his blood sugar regularly, eating three meals... The man was sharing a bathroom (as I recall, a common bathroom for the whole hall) and got ice from McDonald's daily to keep in a cooler in his room to have some form of refrigeration. He didn't have regular meals/meal times ... As the author also said... "I have been haunted by this man."

What can I do, she asks? Great question... I see no real reason I cannot work on a part time program that will accommodate working people.

Thank you.

Keith Rischer, RN has his head wrapped around critical thinking and how to teach students this process. Faculty would serve themselves well by reviewing his work and mimicking his model to teach critical thinking which leads to clinical reasoning for nursing students. This will better serve our communities when our students graduate. Most nursing educators are familiar with Benner's work which appears to be a guiding force, but I also see Tanner's Clinical Judgment model throughout his philosophy. I am working on adoption of Volume I of his new series to utilize in an introductory course prior to students being selected into the nursing program at our school.

Dr. Goldfarb,

Thank you for beginning a discussion is the extremely important topic. I am getting ready to start a DNP program and I am looking at centering my project around the trauma-informed classroom. In my preliminary research, I have found much more literature on trauma informed education interventions for children, but not so much for adults. We do not outgrow our trauma when we turn 18, and as you mentioned, nursing school discusses emotionally difficult topics. The classroom needs to be a safe space (it may be the only safe space some of our students have). I have recently been hired as full-time nursing faculty and my Dean received this article in her email; I am so grateful she remembered what we talked about in my interview and thought to forward this to me. At some point she wants me to present on this topic to other faculty members. Again, thank you so much for this; I hope to see many more trauma informed classrooms!

Dr. Goldfarb,
My research in SOTL led me to a conclusion about higher education that perplexes. “How do we dismantle policies that harm,” when so much of education is ritualistic, single loop feedback learning. Any ideas from you would be most appreciated.

Dear Christine,
Thank you for sharing. I am glad you had support and I hope one day all nurses and nursing students do. Sometime our tragedies and trauma actually make us more compassionate and empathic nurses.
Best,
Sharon

This was me. I had been physically, emotionally and sexually abused as a child. My mom was bipolar and my dad had PTSD from WWII. One nursing instructor during our mental health clinical rotation at the state hospital noticed the signs as I was crying and having a panic attack from talking with my patient. She removed me from the situation and sat down next to me privately and said "What has happened to you?" My life came spilling out like a flood. She could have asked me to withdraw, given me a bad grade or sent me home that day from clinical, but instead she chose to look deeper into my behavior. Thank you for sharing this information.

AWESOME Sharon! I agree that the system needs to change; to better support new grads, and all nurses. Things get stressful and errors can happen because we're human. Personally I think all shifts should go back to 8 hours to help promote safety for our patients and nurses. Thank you for your article.
